St. Francis Xavier: his life

St. Francis Xavier (1506–1552) was one of the first Jesuits and one of the greatest missionaries in the history of the Church. He walked the coasts of Tamil Nadu, bringing the Gospel to ordinary fishing families.

  • 1506: Born on 7 April at the castle of Xavier in the Kingdom of Navarre, in today’s northern Spain, the youngest son of Juan de Jasso, a royal counsellor, and María de Azpilcueta. His first language was Basque.
  • 1512–1516: War came to Navarre. Francis lost his father at the age of nine, and after his brothers joined a failed uprising, the family’s lands were seized and much of the castle was pulled down.
  • 1525: Went to study at the Collège Sainte-Barbe in the University of Paris, where he stayed for eleven years and was known as a fine athlete.
  • 1529: Shared a room with Peter Faber and Ignatius of Loyola. Ambitious for a worldly career, Francis at first resisted Ignatius, until one question changed his life: “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36). It is the verse printed on our festival invitation.
  • 1530: Received his Master of Arts and taught Aristotle’s philosophy at the Collège de Beauvais in Paris.
  • 1534–1540: Made his vows with Ignatius and their companions at Montmartre (1534), was ordained a priest in Venice (1537), and became one of the first members of the Society of Jesus, approved by the Pope in 1540.
  • 1539–1540: Helped Ignatius with his letters in Rome. When the Pope asked for two men for the East and the chosen Bobadilla fell ill, Francis was sent in his place.
  • 1541–1542: Sailed from Lisbon on 7 April 1541, his 35th birthday, and reached Goa on 6 May 1542 after a voyage of more than a year.
  • 1542–1544: Worked among the Parava fishing communities of Tamil Nadu’s Pearl Fishery Coast, around Thoothukudi and Manapad. He had the basic prayers translated into Tamil and went from village to village teaching children and adults the faith.
  • 1545–1552: Carried the Gospel to Malacca, the Moluccas and Japan (1549–1551), then set out for China.
  • 1552: Died on 3 December on Shangchuan (Sancian) Island, off the coast of China. His body was later brought to Goa and rests in the Basilica of Bom Jesus.
  • 1622: Canonised on 12 March by Pope Gregory XV, together with St. Ignatius. He was later named patron of the missions.

His feast day is 3 December. In memory of the saint who still lives in the hearts of Tamil Nadu’s coastal people, St. Xavier’s Church, Sanganankulam, celebrates its festival every year.

Bible verses in his life

St. Francis Xavier lived in the 16th century, so he is not named in the Bible. But these verses are closely tied to his conversion and his missionary work.

His conversion

  • “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36 (Matthew 16:26)). St. Ignatius of Loyola put this question again and again to the ambitious young scholar in Paris, until Francis gave his life to Christ. It is also the verse on our festival invitation.

The call to mission

  • “Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee.” (Genesis 12:1). It was in his mind when he left a comfortable life to join Ignatius’s small band of companions, who became the Jesuits.

The mission (readings for his feast, 3 December)

  • “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15). He travelled thousands of miles across India, Southeast Asia and Japan to preach and baptise.
  • “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” (Matthew 28:19). Planting the Church in new lands was the heart of his mission.
  • “To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.” (1 Corinthians 9:22). He learned the languages and ways of the people he served; on our Tamil coast he taught the prayers in Tamil.
  • “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?” (Romans 10:14). It reflects his urgent zeal to bring the Gospel where it had never been heard.

His words from South India

  • “I am with the outcast and the poor, because it is to them that I am needed.” (Tamil Nadu, 1544–45). He could have stayed in safety and comfort, but he chose to live among the coastal fishing families who faced poverty and neglect: the place where love was needed most.
  • “The consolations of God are so great that they make every hardship sweet.” (Travancore, 1545). Through storms, sickness and sleepless nights he found joy in God’s presence. Peace is not the absence of trouble; it is the presence of grace.

We may not cross the seas as he did, but we can carry his love into our homes, our work and our village.
