About the church

St. Xavier's Church, Sanganankulam, is revered as a holy place blessed by the footsteps of St. Francis Xavier.

Religious Harmony Festival

Sanganankulam, a village near Thisayanvilai in Tirunelveli district, is home to only two Christian families; most of its people are Hindu. Yet the whole village celebrates the feast of St. Xavier’s Church together every year in the last week of November, sharing the cost among themselves.

Social workers praise the feast, where the village comes together across faiths, as an example of religious harmony, and it has been featured in the newspapers.

  • From the flag hoisting to the chariot procession, the villagers themselves arrange everything: lights and sound, the pandal, the chariot and the drums.
  • In the procession, Ayyappa devotees carry the statue of St. Xavier on the chariot (sapparam).
  • Pilgrims from other places are welcomed with a place to stay and a festive meal (asana virundhu), with the villagers bearing the cost.

History

According to the church’s tradition, around 1547 St. Francis Xavier, travelling on foot as a poor missionary, preached in many coastal villages and at Kottar near Nagercoil. On that journey he came to Sanganankulam, where the villagers offered the saint a cup of buttermilk, and he drank it. He told the people to build a church for Jesus in their village. Not knowing who he was, they built a small church of palm leaves as he had asked. Later, his travel notes found in Goa showed that the visitor who asked for the church was St. Francis Xavier, and a new church was built. Because of the many blessings received on this holy ground, St. Xavier holds a place in the hearts of Hindu brothers and sisters as well as Christians.
